Bob's exercise experience
by Robert Magel, B.A. Sport Management JumpStretch, Inc. Certified
Bob Savickas is a retired carpenter. The 30 plus years he worked in this profession took its toll on his body. Last year, 2004, he had the first of his complete knee replacement surgeries. This fall he will have his second. This past January-2005- he had a severe bone spur removed from his right shoulder. Our story begins in March -2005:
I introduced Bob to physical therapist Tim Duble of Doeberling-Muccio Physical Therapy Inc. who have an office in the Jump Stretch operation located in Youngstown, Ohio. They utilize the FlexBand room as part of their physical therapy.
Bob was experiencing severe pain and limited movement in his right shoulder. Despite following the five minutes of instructions he was given on how to rehab his shoulder after his operation, he was having no improvements. I must note that the surgery was done here in Pittsburgh and there is no connection between the Pittsburgh hospital and the physical therapy operation in Youngstown. I suggested that he look into the benefits of using the FlexBand as a means of rehabilitation for his shoulder.
As an observer during the first visit to see Tim, it was interesting to listen and learn about the shoulder. What a complex joint! The first session lasted two hours. A series of exercises was given to Bob to do at home with two Mini-FlexBands and one Light FlexBand. Along with this was the suggestion that Bob make up a pulley system that hooks onto the door so he could move both arms simultaneously.
The second session was two weeks later. This examination determined that the range of motion had improved significantly, the pain was decreased, and strength was coming back to his arm. The FlexBands played an important role in this rehabilitation.
In the pictures you see here- Bob is demonstrating a few of the exercises he worked on. He has the arm sling he wore after the surgery. He used this as his hook up for the FlexBand so he could secure it to the door. The door is closed with the sling part on the inside of the door, the strap hanging on the outside of the door with the FlexBand attached to the clip on the sling. An ingenious use of material with no cost.
The pulley system is equally impressive. He bought a $1.50 pulley, $.50 worth of cord, whittled two pieces of wood for the handles, used another sling, and he was in business. This exercise was done 15 minutes at a time two times a day.
These are simple and effective ways that one can utilize the FlexBand under limited circumstances. For the minimal cost of the two Mini-FlexBands and one light-Flex Band, Bob has reduced the pain he was in, increased the range of motion of the shoulder, and gained strength in his arm. Effective, Simple, Beneficial.
The next visit to see Tim will be in June.
